Final lecture and summing up of level 4 context:

Throughout the level 4 lecture programme we were introuduced to many aspects of fashion theory, context and different areas of the industry that have developed since the dawn of the industrial revolution. I have taken great interest in the fashion technology lecture. I really enjoyed the concept of how fabric and textiles are being revolutionised into new wearable materials that are very unconventional. I also decided to answer the question on technology for my written portfolio and adresses whether or not fashion technology is produced on a functional basis.

Friday 16h March: lecture 13

Taste, consumption and alternatives 

During today’s lecture we were introduced to the concept of materiality and social class within the design industry from the 20th century up to the present. I found the social structure of capitalism very interesting in terms of knowing how the evolution of the working class has enabled higher status social groups to develop. I also found the designs of Buckminster Fuller to be very inspiring in terms of how he had chosen to design streamlined pieces that had shown diversity and sustainability. I was also interested in the development  in design of the Porche and how it had altered through the 50’s to the 1980’s and how this reflected social structure during the 20th century. 

Fashion technology lecture

As i am choosing to compose my essay based on the fashion technology question for my written portfolio i found this lecture very interesting in terms of how designers are collaborating with contemporary technolgy to enhance their designs and create fascinating productions. Viktor and Rolf were able to blend their models into moving traffic in new york city with the help of digital technology and projection. Even though these practices are often considered gimmekey and unconventional designers and enbracing new tecgnological advances and utilising their capabilities in reaction with the scientific world.

Group Crit session- During the session returning after christmas we were asked to create design pages that clearly demonstrated our theme and shape idea for the creation of our final piece. Drawing from the Zhandra Rhodes images from the post modernism lecture I decided to research into Hippies, Bohemianism and culture of the 1960’s that was heavily influenced by the natural world and freedom of expression. I found that this theme needed further research into it as apposed to creating a piece that would look too main stream. I therefore decided to look into the theme of activism and rebellion against society. This drew me to look into the Vexed Generation and these creations that resembled armour through the theme of protection.
